Follow-up of the Copernicus4regions webinar “How Copernicus helps Europe’s regions to increase resilience to climate change: user stories about water management”

On the 5th of October 2021, NEREUS together with the European Commission and the European Space Agency organised the 2nd Copernicus4regions webinar: “How Copernicus helps Europe’s regions to increase resilience to climate change: user stories about water management” as part of a series of 5 online events. The objective of the webinar was to engage in a debate on the dimension of Copernicus for the Green Deal and the development of sustainable practices related to water management.

Sharing their individual experiences and views, public users from different parts of Europe (Carlo Sass Sørensen, Denmark (Denmark Central region), Hrafnhildur Hannesdóttir (Iceland) and Maria Antonietta Dessena, ENAS (the Sardinian Water Authority) and Apostolos Tzimas (EMVIS, Greece), Sardinia region, Italy) presented their use cases and engaged in an intensive discussion with the audience on relevant matters such as how the information on water quality is used in regions, etc.

Further, the debate was enriched by the impulse statements of Ms Hana Zdanowska, Mayor of Łódź, Member of the Committee of the Regions’ working group “Green Deal Going Local”, Ambassador on the Climate Pact, and Mr Juan Espadas (ES/PES), Mayor of Seville, Chair of the Committee of the Regions’ working group “Green Deal Going Local”. The politicians emphasized the necessity to use Copernicus in regions to achieve better sustainable water management and explained the decision-making process at the regional level to actually deploy the use of the data. Moreover, they showcased Copernicus as a tool to contribute to the goals of the European Green Deal for a new EU-Climate policy and growth strategy at an EU level.

The webinar was moderated by Oliver Loebel, Secretary-General EUREAU and it was open to the public for questions.
