26 July 2021 \u2013 The National Space Centre (NSC) in partnership with Greywood Arts has announced an open call for the Space Waste Residency, a unique month-long artist-in-residence programme. The sculptural project examines the debris produced by the acceleration of space technology and is supported by Cork County Council.<\/p>\n
The residency is an exciting invitation for an artist to reimagine and re-purpose technological components that can\u2019t be recycled. It\u2019s an opportunity to explore the impact of human interactions with space and how we could move forward into the future,\u201d explained Jessica Bonenfant, Artistic Director at Greywood Arts<\/strong>. \u201cThis collaboration will give an artist the chance to collect materials from the National Space Centre and observe the workings of a busy ground station before immersing themselves in the creative environment at Greywood.\u201d<\/p>\n The NSC is set to share space communications components including circuit boards, assemblies and data subframes with the artist, as well as preserved panels from their recently dismantled 11-metre EU-5B4 satellite ground communications dish. The selected artist will then have a month in residence at Greywood Arts to develop the work that emerges.<\/p>\n\n \u201cThis is a pivotal time in space exploration,\u201d explained NSC CEO Rory Fitzpatrick<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at manned Martian exploration in the near future, while Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson have launched space tourism as a viable industry. At the same time, there are more than 125 million pieces of space garbage orbiting our planet. It\u2019s an ideal moment to examine questions around our responsibility to live sustainably not only on Earth, but beyond it.\u201d<\/p>\n The international invitation to artists is open until 22 August and the residency will run in November.
