Participants will be supported in using EU\u00a0satellite\u00a0images and signals to build their solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHacker is just a\u00a0term\u00a0for a person who can apply a skillset to a problem,\u201d\u00a0explained\u00a0<strong>Dr Niall Smith, Head of Research at MTU.<\/strong> \u201cIf you are a have a business idea that\u2019s\u00a0scalable and\u00a0has\u00a0the potential to address a global problem, the Cassini Hackathon will deliver\u00a0hands-on\u00a0experience of how the rapidly growing space sector can give you a competitive edge in ways you might not yet imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hackathons like the CASSINI are a great way to nurture new ideas and new approaches to Ireland\u2019s green spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is open to\u00a0anyone over\u00a018\u00a0including\u00a0students,\u00a0startups,\u00a0businesses\u00a0and people or organisations with a\u00a0challenge\u00a0that can be addressed with satellite data. The Irish organisers are preparing to welcome people from computer\u00a0science, marketing, business,\u00a0design, environmental studies and more.\u00a0Participants can register in teams or\u00a0sign up\u00a0as individuals\u00a0to be matched into a team before the start of the competition.\u00a0Teams will be supported with business, technical, and marketing workshops along the way.<\/p>\n<p>The Ireland hackathon is being organised by the NSC on behalf of the <strong>European Commission\u2019s\u00a0Competitive Space Start-ups for Innovation Initiative (CASSINI)<\/strong>, the European programme to nurture business applications of digital space technologies. Irish teams will compete against teams from nine other EU countries over the weekend of the 19th\u00a0and 20th\u00a0of June, and the 1st\u00a0place Irish team will go on to the European finals in July.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Irish\u00a0competition is sponsored by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blacknight.com\/\"><strong>Blacknight\u00a0Internet Solutions<\/strong><\/a>, with prizes of \u20ac2,500, \u20ac1,500 and \u20ac500 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. Each of these teams will also receive a .earth domain and a Minimus hosting package for one year from Blacknight. <strong>Michele Neylon,\u00a0CEO of\u00a0Blacknight<\/strong>,\u00a0said, \u201cWe\u2019re excited to support this event, and to see the ideas that come out of the weekend. Opened as\u00a0Elfordstown\u00a0Earthstation\u00a0in 1984, the \u20ac24M facility will celebrate ten years of operation as the NSC in 2021. The company provides commercial broadcast services, ground control support for satellites and spacecraft, academic research partnerships and space industry consulting.
