24 NOVEMBER 2021\u00a0\u2014\u00a0An out of this world exhibition, complete with a digital space launch, is due to take place at the National Space Centre<\/strong> (NSC) from\u00a03 through 5 December. The\u00a0secure facility outside Midleton is\u00a0normally closed to be public,\u00a0but\u00a0will be hosting\u00a0the launch as part of\u00a0an art exhibit\u00a0addressing the challenging issue of space waste.\u00a0A\u00a0limited number of tours of the NSC will\u00a0also\u00a0be available to visitors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition is the culmination of\u00a0Ireland\u2019s\u00a0first Space Waste Residency, hosted by NSC neighbour Greywood Arts<\/strong> and funded by Cork County Council.\u00a0The selected<\/span>\u00a0Artist in Residence,\u00a0Nicklas Lundberg<\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0was chosen from almost 100\u00a0international\u00a0applicants.\u00a0The Swedish\u00a0sculptor\u00a0has worked in Greywood Arts\u2019 studios through\u00a0the month of November, utilising\u00a0space junk found at the NSC together with\u00a0sounds captured inside the site\u2019s iconic\u00a032-meter\u00a0dish. The result is an interactive\u00a0installation\u00a0that responds sonically to the proximity of the viewer, which visitors will be able to\u00a0interact with.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The exhibition will also feature work from\u00a0110\u00a0local students. As part of the project, sculptor\u00a0<\/span>Scott Gorham, Education Coordinator at Greywood Arts,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0has led young people through a\u00a0<\/span>series of world building and sculpture workshops that explore language creation, geography, and ecological concepts like symbiosis.\u00a0Participants used materials\u00a0including\u00a0waste circuit boards from the NSC, clay, and fabric to create topographies and symbiotic creatures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the heart of this project is encouraging young people to use their imaginations to envision new worlds, in hope they will apply their creativity to our own world and it\u2019s future,\u201d explained Gorham. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A sculptural installation will showcase the collective language of symbols designed by students and then f<\/span>abricated in neon in San Jose by California artist Kevin Chong before being shipped back for exhibition at the National Space Centre. <\/span>A digital media\u00a0exhibition\u00a0will display\u00a0more of the\u00a0project executed by the\u00a0student\u00a0participants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A special reception for the students will include\u00a0a talk\u00a0from\u00a0the National Space Centre\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Chief\u00a0Technical Officer,\u00a0Bruce Hannah.<\/span><\/strong> The NSC\u2019s resident space engineer will teach guests about satellite technology, and demonstrate by using a satellite to send digital copies of the young artists\u2019 projects into space. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
