Not only are these areas some of the most biodiverse on Earth, they also host large human populations (40% of the population globally lives within 100km from the coastline) and substantial economic activity. But, as the human factor increases, these unique ecosystems are experiencing rapid habitat loss, overexploitation of natural resources, pollution and climate change \u2013 all of which contribute to biodiversity loss.\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent online workshop entitled \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/newsroom\/news\/register-copernicus-biodiversity-coastal-ecosystems-workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Biodiversity in Coastal Ecosystems<\/a>\u2019, the answer to maintaining a healthy balance between environmental protection and economic activity could be found in space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong used to monitor land and marine ecosystems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/eu-space-programme\/what-earth-observation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth Observation<\/a> is well-positioned to be a key tool in the fight against the biodiversity loss happening in Europe\u2019s coastal regions,\u201d said Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), European Commission representative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, under the Copernicus programme umbrella, was jointly organised by <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/departments\/defence-industry-and-space_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DG DEFIS and EUSPA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Copernicus data to monitor \u2013 and protect \u2013 coastal biodiversity<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/copernicus\/what-copernicus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus<\/a>, the European Earth Observation programme, offers numerous products and services for protecting, even restoring, coastal plant and animal life:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marine.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS)<\/a>: provides regular, systematic reference information on the physical and biogeochemical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems of the world\u2019s oceans and Europe\u2019s regional seas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/land.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS)<\/a>: provides geographical information on land cover and use, state of vegetation, water cycle and the Earth&#8217;s surface energy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)<\/a>: supports society, climate researchers and decision makers by providing authoritative information about the past, present and future climate in Europe and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>During the workshop, various organisations and end users shared how they use Copernicus services and data to address biodiversity loss in coastal areas. For example, in Finland, researchers are using Earth Observation to monitor coastal algae blooms and the impact these blooms have on the Finnish economy, while in the Galapagos Islands it is being used to track whale shark migration.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another company is using satellite-based monitoring tools to help predict jellyfish swarms. \u201cJellyfish can have a huge impact on the Blue Economy, causing fisheries to collapse and clogging hydropower plants,\u201d said Federica Colombo, a marine scientist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombosky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ColomboSky<\/a>, a company that specialises in innovative satellite-based solutions for improving water quality monitoring and ensuring a sustainable use of marine resources.<\/p>\n<h3>Mitigating the effects of climate change<\/h3>\n<p>Marine scientists and policymakers also use Earth Observation to fight the effects of climate change \u2013 one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss. Take for example extreme weather events, a consequence of climate change that can have a big impact on coastal biodiversity. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineboard.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Marine Board<\/a> shared how it uses Copernicus data to help researchers understand how these events impact coastal habitats and marine species. This same data is also used by policymakers to forecast extreme weather events and increase resilience in coastal areas accordingly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another consequence of climate change is the warming of the world\u2019s oceans, a warming that can cause coral bleaching. Researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Council for Scientific and Industrial Research<\/a> (CSIR) in South Africa, use Copernicus data to monitor sea surface temperatures in the western Indian Ocean. \u201cHaving accurate data allows us to better predict bleaching events and how such events could impact food security and ecosystem stability,\u201d said CSIR Senior Researcher Marie Smith.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Harmonising policy with data<\/h3>\n<p>While all this work is beneficial, the problem is that it tends to happen in silos. \u201cThe vast majority of biodiversity monitoring programmes take place at the national or even subnational level,\u201d said Joana Soares, Executive Secretary at the <a href=\"https:\/\/marinebon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marine Biodiversity and Observation Network<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To have a true impact, these individual projects need to be connected \u2013 and that requires harmonised policy. \u201cHarmonisation starts with Earth Observation, as access to accurate data can help tie the many different projects, goals, and policies targeting biodiversity loss together,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/departments\/maritime-affairs-and-fisheries_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DG MARE<\/a> representative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Media note: <\/strong>This feature can be republished without charge provided the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) is acknowledged as the source at the top or the bottom of the story.
