So, how do we sustainably provide for 8 billion people, let alone 9?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a new report published by the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA),\u00a0 in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs<\/a> (UNOOSA) the answer can be found in space.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled \u201cContribution to the Space2030 Agenda \u2013 The European Union Space Programme \u201cEU Space\u201d Supporting a world with a population of 8 billion\u201d, the report focuses on how to best leverage EU Space data and information to answer the sustainability challenges of today while also paving the way towards a sustainable \u2013 and more densely populated \u2013 future.<\/p>\n<h3>Space as a driver for sustainable development<\/h3>\n<p>Released within the framework of the UN\u2019s Space 2030 Agenda, which provides a roadmap for using space as a driver for sustainable development, the report looks at how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/copernicus\/what-copernicus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/galileo\/What-Galileo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galileo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/egnos\/what-egnos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EGNOS <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/govsatcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GOVSATCOM <\/a>can address such population-related challenges as food security, water management, climate change and the environment.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough case studies and concrete examples, this report showcases how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/european-space\/eu-space-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Space Programme<\/a> and its synergies actively contribute to tackling some of the most pressing sustainability challenges,\u201d says EUSPA Executive Director Rodrigo da Costa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy raising awareness about different solutions and stressing the importance of space in a world with an increasing population, we\u2019ve provided a very practical overview for decision and policy makers on what space can do vis-\u00e0-vis the selected challenges,\u201d adds UNOOSA Acting Director Niklas Hedman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report is the latest outcome of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euspa.europa.eu\/newsroom\/news\/european-space-technology-key-achieving-more-sustainable-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)<\/a> that EUSPA and UNOOSA signed to collaborate on using space technology to achieve the shared goals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/2030agenda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris Agreement on Climate Change<\/a> and EU Green Deal.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can read the full report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/res\/oosadoc\/data\/documents\/2023\/stspace\/stspace85_0_html\/st_space_085E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Media note: <\/strong>This feature can be republished without charge provided the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) is acknowledged as the source at the top or the bottom of the story.
