Transmission and Distribution System Operators (TSOs & DSOs) are legally mandated to ensure that no unauthorised constructions exist within the buffer zones surrounding their infrastructure, to ensure safe operations of their powerlines. i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, a division of the Iberdrola group focused on electricity distribution in Spain, has collaborated together with the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and the Dutch company NEO to demonstrate how space data, particularly Sentinel-2 combined with commercial very high resolution satellites, can effectively detect potentially illegal constructions near powerlines.
