GEO, the global Group on Earth Observations (EO) is an intergovernmental partnership for people, nature, and the planet hosted by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
GEO promotes equitable access to EO information to help decision-makers understand and act on the global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
EuroGEO, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, is Europe’s regional section of GEO and connects the continent to the global GEO network, promoting user engagement, linking communities, and supporting national GEO structures for informed decision-making.
In this week’s Observer, we look at EuroGEO, its plans for the future, and some of the takeaways from its most recent workshop.
EUROGeo: a platform for strengthening Europe’s Earth Observation ecosystem
Since its launch in 2017, EuroGEO has worked to coordinate existing activities within Europe’s Earth Observation (EO) ecosystem to ensure a coherent European contribution to GEO. Now, the initiative is unveiling its updated mission and vision for empowering Europe’s EO community and maximising the potential of European innovation.
EuroGEO aims to establish itself as the primary forum for all European EO stakeholders. By fostering collaboration and creating a strong, interconnected network, EuroGEO helps stakeholders engage and share expertise, thus strengthening the European EO ecosystem. This collaborative approach reduces fragmentation across European initiatives, increases synergies between EO players, and improves Europe’s capacity to address pressing global challenges through the use of EO technologies.

The EuroGEO workshop 2024
This year’s EuroGEO workshop opened a dialogue within the Europe’s EO ecosystem and laid the groundwork for the initiative’s future structure.
During sessions related to GEO’s nine focus areas—biodiversity, climate change, disaster risk reduction, energy resources, food security, sustainable development, public health, urban development, and water resources management—participants explored solutions to improve the delivery and use of Copernicus-based services at global, national, regional, and local levels. EuroGEO stood out as a key asset to support users and investors across various sectors on the EU scale.
Additionally, the session titled ‘Synergies through GEO Focus Areas’ facilitated exchanges on how these nine GEO focus areas can promote collaboration with the EuroGEO community. It also highlighted best practices to strengthen Europe’s contributions to GEO.

Bridging Copernicus, EuroGEO, and DestinE
EuroGEO’s role in supporting the uptake of Copernicus and DestinE was also highlighted during discussions.
Copernicus is the EO component of the EU Space Programme, delivering information services that draw from satellite and in situ data. DestinE (Destination Earth) is a flagship initiative of the European Commission to develop a highly accurate digital model of the Earth, also referred to as a digital twin. This digital twin will help model, monitor, and simulate natural phenomena, hazards, and human activities, assisting users in designing accurate and actionable adaptation strategies and mitigation measures.
EuroGEO can serve as a forum to improve collaboration between the EuroGEO community, Copernicus Entrusted Entities, and DestinE key partners. By fostering interaction, it helps break down barriers between these initiatives and prevents siloed thinking within Europe’s EO sector.

Collaboration is central to progress
During the workshop, examples of national coordination mechanisms were presented, allowing national desks to demonstrate how they ensure consistency and alignment with major European programmes and initiatives relevant to EuroGEO, such as Horizon Europe, Copernicus, and DestinE.
In a dedicated session, panellists shared examples of how Member States implement these mechanisms to coordinate and align European activities with their national initiatives. The session also explored the relationship between Earth Observation (EO) and national policies, focusing on the inter-ministerial aspects of EO. Additionally, it highlighted examples of Copernicus National Collaboration programmes.
Europe’s role is key
Europe plays a central role in advancing the objectives of GEO. The session ‘EuroGEO and Regional GEOs’ underscored the importance of Europe’s contributions, positioning EuroGEO as a crucial facilitator for user engagement. By fostering synergies with other regional GEOs, EuroGEO leverages on existing initiatives and infrastructures to build upon the wider scientific community and funding resources.
This collaborative approach is essential for improving regional cooperation and shaping the future of the GEO work program in the future.
The Earth Talks: GEO Global Forum 2025
Building on the themes of collaboration and synergy discussed during the EuroGEO Workshop 2024, the European Commission will continue its engagement with the global Earth Observation community at the GEO Global Forum 2025. The Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), the Joint Research Centre (JRC), Copernicus Entrusted Entities, and the wider Copernicus community will participate in this key event. Taking place in Rome, Italy, from 5 to 9 May 2025, the Forum will also host EuroGEO alongside other regional GEOs.
