Online Briefing: Accelerating Commercial Pathways

We are pleased to invite you to an interactive workshop where Helen Bates, SRO Accelerating Commercial Pathways, can tell you about progress with the Accelerating Commercial Pathways programme, and discuss how you can get involved and help support the change we are seeking to deliver.

Background

The Strategic Defence Review sets out an ambitious transformation across Defence, placing national warfighting readiness front and centre, and commercial activity is right at the heart of delivering that change.  Defence Commercial has a critical role in shaping how Defence procures, engages with industry and brings innovation to the front line at pace. And the Accelerating Commercial Pathways programme forms a key part of this transformation. This programme aims to increase the pace of our work and make Defence more adaptable to future challenges. It is focused on driving a shift in behaviour and ways of working through better guidance, and unlocking the opportunities of new procurement legislation.

Underpinning the programme are a range of commercial pathways. These handrails guide staff through different types of procurement, highlighting opportunities to exploit flexibilities within commercial policy and legislation, recognising that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach.

The main benefits of the Accelerating Commercial Pathways programme are:
  • Enabling rapid delivery of capability to the end-user.
  • Opening-up opportunities for greater flexibility, collaboration and iteration.
  • Allowing for quicker development and testing of new technologies.
  • Accelerating the speed of commercial decision-making and assurance, with a focus on earlier planning, strategy development and closer collaboration with customers and suppliers.

Industry’s involvement in this programme is essential to ensure that we are most effectively sharing knowledge, best practice and real-world insights across the Defence Enterprise to shape our ways of working. This includes learning lessons from past procurements and identifying where we can improve our commercial practices and drive pace into our procurements.
